What is a Web Application anyway

A “Web Application” is any software that is operated in a web browser, therefore potentially on any type of PC or computer capable of running a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and so on.

It is developed in a browser-supported programming language (such as a combination of JavaScript, PHP, ExtJS, HTML and CSS) and relies on a web browser to enable a user to interact with it.

Web Applications are increasing in popularity due to the continued evolution and dependency of the Internet and networks, and also the convenience of using a web browser as a client with no requirements to first install the software. The ability to update and maintain Web Applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for their popularity, as is the inherent support for cross-platform, cross-device compatibility.

Common web applications you might already use without realising include webmail, such as, productivity suites, such as Office Web Apps or Google Docs, online auctions, such as eBay and increasingly the historic vendors of accounting and CRM type software, such as Sage, are all now focusing on the delivery of their systems over the Internet, or if installed locally on a company’s servers, having users access the program through a web browser, whether they are in the office or working remotely.

What is the difference between a Web Application and a Database Web Application & why should my business care?

Nothing really. “Web Application”, “Database Web Application”, “Web App”…they will all rely on an underlying database in some way.

However, in the context of how we talk to our customers, sometimes we refer to the systems we develop for them as ‘Database Web Applications’ specifically, since they understand the marriage of what they had, versus what we develop for them, a little better.

Often our customers have one or more ‘databases’ (e.g. SQL Server or Access databases or Excel spreadsheets and so on) within their business that are used to track things, record things, calculate things and so forth.  Where the reasoning for having such databases is based on the specific nature of information stored and its lack of ‘fit’ to be stored or processed within an existing off-the-shelf accounting system or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system they may already use, this is the primary driving force that enables a company to recognise the potential to develop their own application tailored to their specific needs.

A Database Web Application from Contedia is developed for each customer exclusively, with no similarity to any application that may have gone before, potentially consolidating many of the customer’s databases, sources of information, processes and procedures, and it provides a solution or significant enhancement to existing limitations that allow the business to go on to become far more efficient, consistent, accurate, productive, accountable and automated in various ways.  Visibility of the business’ activities, work statuses, research or development data is significantly improved and new opportunities to exploit the data, provide meaningful reports, automate tasks and so forth are all made possible.  In our experience the result, no matter how far in the ‘back-office’ the application may reside, is always felt by improved sales and revenues.  Always.

One of the most frequently sought after functions from a bespoke Database Web Application is the encapsulation of a company’s knowledge and procedures, which is often specialised and known by only a small number of staff, so that not only can dependancy on specific individuals be significantly reduced, but substantial tangible value is added to the business itself by having a highly customised and efficient management system in place.  Such systems can often be fundemental in an SME owner’s long-term exit strategy and the maximisation of the business’ sale value.

SME owners and larger business management teams benefit alike from a Database Web Application specific to the company’s industry activities and their need to improve or control existing business processes.

So how much does a Web Application cost to develop?

This is the part we hate to talk about.  Not because it’s prohibitively expensive, quite the opposite. But because in truth it’s a difficult question to answer since each business’s requirement from a Database Web Application differs so greatly.

One significant benefit to Contedia’s agile method of Web Application development is that we can structure the delivery of systems in a phased approach according to our clients’ demands, bringing core features and functions to life quickly, whilst continued development continues without disruption and updates and upgrades are rolled out seamlessly.  This ensures that stakeholders begin to realise see an immediate business benefit and a return on initial investment, even prior to fully financing the application.
